Discourse-oriented Distributivity in Mandarin Chinese
This paper discovers the phenomenon that in Mandarin Chinese when plurals are under focus of zhiyou ‘only’ or lian ‘even’, a distributive reading is derived by default. It is argued that this type of distributivity is not syntax marked, but is discourse-oriented, which shows linguistic effects of economic structuring sets of focus-introduced alternatives (Rooth, 1985, 1992). The proposal succes...
متن کاملDistributivity in Ellipsis in Chinese Grant
This paper explores the phenomenon of distributivity manifest in ellipsis in Chinese. It will be proposed that in addition to standard syntactical distributivity projection a distributive reading also results from a focus projection that involves anaphoric relations from context. A distributive reading will occur if an elided string is anaphorically associated with a previous discourse that sha...
متن کاملWeak Distributivity implying Distributivity
Let B be a complete Boolean algebra. We show that if λ is an infinite cardinal and B is weakly (λ, ω)-distributive, then B is (λ, 2)-distributive. Using a similar argument, we show that if κ is a weakly compact cardinal such that B is weakly (2, κ)distributive and B is (α, 2)-distributive for each α < κ, then B is (κ, 2)-distributive.
متن کاملILP-based Conceptual Analysis for Chinese NPs
In this paper, we explore a conceptual resource for Chinese nominal phrases, which allows multi-dependency and distinction between dependency and the corresponding exact relation. We also provide an ILP-based method to learn mapping rules from training data, and use the rules to analyze new nominal phrases.
متن کاملOn word order, binding relations, and plurality within Chinese NPs
We provide a semantic account of the free ordering of NP-internal elements in Chinese and argue that this provides evidence for the lack of DP in Chinese. We also extend this account to the Mandarin plural marker –men, tying the definiteness of –men phrases and its number/definiteness interaction to the classifier status of –men and the lack of DP in Chinese. We show that the binding properties...
